June 30, 1980, Vigdis Finboadotir (Vigdís Finnbogadóttir), the Republic of Iceland's presidential election, won the world's first elected female president, and Iceland's only female president so far.

The friendly political environment that gave Iceland the world's first democratically elected female head of state-Vigdis Finboadotir (Vigdís finnbogadóttir) in 1980 has not only opened up a new chapter in history, but has also inspired more women to participate in politics.

In 2013, the World Economic Forum (WEF) published the Global disparity chart, Iceland's fifth consecutive year as the country with the smallest gap, meaning that women have almost the same status as men in education, health and so on. Iceland's efforts in the area of gender equality have shortened the gender gap and increased women's rights and interests, creating a gender-friendly space.
